Intro to Debate - Middle School

In this foundational course, students are introduced to the world of public speaking and argumentative thinking in a fun, low-pressure environment. Through engaging games, structured discussions, and short speech exercises, students learn how to express their ideas clearly, organize their thoughts into basic arguments, and respond respectfully to others. They explore everyday topics that matter to them—like school rules, favorite activities, or community issues—to develop early persuasive skills grounded in their lived experiences. This class builds confidence, self-awareness, and a strong baseline for more advanced debate coursework.

Critical Learning Standards:

  • CDA1.1: Identify and articulate a clear claim on a familiar topic.
  • CDA1.2: Provide a relevant reason and simple example to support an argument.
  • CDA1.3: Listen actively and summarize opposing views in partner or group conversations.
  • CDA1.4: Deliver short, structured persuasive speeches with vocal clarity and eye contact.
  • CDA1.5: Recognize basic rhetorical strategies (e.g., repetition, emotional appeals) in media and peer speech.
